Just an update added cheato seems to be doing well I've put s peace of live rock on it slightly to hold it in place but it's got a gentle flow passing over and through it.
Any ideas how to remove nitrates other that removing bio balls

Waste (uneaten food, or poop aka detritus) breaks down and ammonia is formed. Beneficial bacteria breaks the ammonia down into nitrite, and other beneficial bacteria break the nitrite down into nitrate. Then other bacteria break the nitrate down into nitrogen gas and it is released into the atmosphere. This last step isn't always efficiently done, so there's a buildup of nitrate and that is one of the many reasons to do water changes.  Water changes dilute the concentration of nitrate that builds up over time.

Ammonia and nitrite are very toxic in a marine environment. Nitrate is far less toxic, but in high concentrations it can be harmful and even fatal too.  Like I said before, 5ppm is acceptable.  You're tank hasn't been set up for all that long, so eventually as the biological filter establishes itself better, you should see your numbers start to fall.  The important thing is you don't see any nitrite or ammonia (I hope).  The fact that you are getting nitrate readings are telling you your biological filter is working (the nitrogen cycle I described above is doing its thing).

Ok thats good I have got loads of bio balls in my filter box (aqua medic reef) I have removed some more balls in trying to get them all out of my over flow so it's straight into the filter box then thought a filter pad then though the ball then to skimmer.
When I removed them I going bellow 5ppm so will see when the chaeto and the caluarpa start to do there thing I shouldn't have an issue with getting it down to 0.
I'm planning on 2 more fish this weekend or maybe a zoa.

Do you still have this tank? Is it thriving? I'd love to get some info on how you kept it up over the years.
