Clown fish
« on: January 29, 2012, 04:48:26 AM »
Thought I'd share this with you lot since no one has yet posted

A couple of years ago I had a go at raising Clown fish.
While I didn't make a Million I had a lot of fun....just to see if I could do it.

Fry once hatched

Once Meta started

Weeeeee little Clown fish

Hope you enjoy

What I did was have the Clown's lay on a tile, That way when the time comes you just lift the tile out. (You need to know hatching date...within a Day)
I placed the tile in a hatching tank (50ltrs) with approx 25 ltrs of Display water, and placed an air line NOT AN AIR STONE at the eggs ( This acts as if it was Dad cleaning the eggs) Cover all for sides of tank with a black rubbish bag to keep light out and kept the room dark. Once I added the tile with the eggs on I started to slowly lower the Sg down to 1.018 over the next 12 or so hours then add Phytoplankton turning the water a ligh green and then added Rotifers.

Its very Labour intensive tank must be cleaned 4 -5 times a day and feeding is the same...if not more. I used  1/4in air line to suck the bottom of the tank (cleaning dead Rotifers,  Phytoplankton, and fry) adding new 1.018 Sg water tinting the water green and adding more Rotifers.

Fry can't see their food so you need alot of it so when they strick they will get something.

After Meta (approx 10 days) bbs is feed along with Rotifers then only bbs for a couple of weeks then I just feed flake some as the rest of my fish.

Sorry for the long winded post. But it might help someone wanting to give it a go

Not long winded at all budd very interesting, so how long between laying and hatching is the time scale, do the eggs change colour nearer the time to hatch, my second batch have just been eaten again lol

I think it depends on few things...eg tank temp and how regular lights on and off etc,

I've seen hatching from 6 - 9 days after laying. Hatching normally within 1/2 to an hour after lights out.
Yeah they do change colour...should go orange with a black dot in the middle.... the dot gets bigger (the Fry)

If you cant get the eggs out use a torch at hatching time ...Hold it above the water surface in a corner and the fry will swimm to it, then use one of the wife's soup laddles to scoupe them out.

If you want to watch the eggs hatch but not collect them use a RED LED torch or cover a normal tourch with red

Fish don't see red

Well done to have them hatch and rear them as a lot dont succeed so keep up the good work, a m8 of mine has reared about 5 different sorts of clowns along with some purple freidmani. He turned his garage into a fish room and had about 20 tanks in it with all clowns in he also bred Banghais which he sold on to LFS. eric :86:
